Instagram Story Ads: Formats Built for a Full-Screen Vertical Feed

A Story ad occupies the entire screen for a few seconds and competes with a thumb that is already moving. The formats that survive it are the ones that look like the surrounding Stories: a screenshot someone reposted, a note typed on a phone, a search result. Anything that reads as a designed banner gets skipped before it is read.

Why the format works

Native beats designed in a native container

Stories are a feed of unpolished personal posts. An ad that matches that texture gets a moment of attention that a branded layout never gets, because the reader has to look at it to work out what it is.

Full-screen 9:16 removes every competing element

Unlike a feed placement there is no surrounding content, no caption, no comments. Whatever is on screen has undivided attention for its two or three seconds, so a single legible idea outperforms a dense composition.

The thumb rests at the bottom

Readers hold the phone with the thumb near the lower third, which is also where the tap-to-skip zone is. Anything critical placed there is either missed or accidentally dismissed, so the message belongs in the upper two thirds.

Use it when

  • Products that can be understood from a single image without explanation
  • Younger audiences who treat Stories as their primary feed
  • Retargeting, where the reader already knows the product and needs one reason to act
  • Offers with a genuine time limit, which the ephemeral format reinforces

Skip it when

  • The product needs several steps of explanation before it makes sense
  • Your creative only exists as a horizontal or square asset
  • The audience skews to an age group that does not use Stories

Three mistakes that kill this format

Reusing a square feed ad with bars top and bottom

Letterboxing announces that the ad was made for somewhere else. Compose at 9:16 from the start; every prompt on this page already does.

Putting the call to action at the very bottom

That is the dismiss zone and the safe-area cutoff. Keep the message and the action in the middle of the frame.

Too much text to read in three seconds

One sentence, one number, one product. If the reader has to work, they have already tapped through.
